30 June 2017
Looking for that perfect family day out, summer evenings of music or a cultural get-together with friends? Pavilion Theatre has all your bases covered this July! Read on for a taste of the great events coming up as our Summer 2017 programme winds up.
_______________
THEATRE
Following its sold-out run at Pavilion in 2016, Every Brilliant Thing (Tue 11 – Sun 16 Jul) is returning for eight performances only. This deeply personal play presented by Paines Plough, deals with topics like depression and mental health in a way that critics have described as “captivating”, “heart-wrenching” and “filled to the brim with joy”. Above all, it’s about a young boy who starts a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world.
The unstoppable Mikel Murfi once again brings his masterful one-man play The Man in the Woman’s Shoes (Tue 25, Wed 26 & Sat 29 Jul) to our stage, as well as it’s equally captivating sequel I Hear You and Rejoice (Thu 27 – Sat 29 Jul). These tender, hilarious, authentic pieces are best seen together, and for just €30 a “double bill” ticket is available for Sat 29 Jul only!
FAMILY
“There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo”, I hear you say? We beg to differ! The Gruffalo – Live on Stage! (Tue 4 – Sun 9 Jul) is the global phenomenon by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler brought to life by the talented folks at Tall Stories. Kids will absolutely adore this eye-popping, all-singing adaptation, but grown-ups should book soon – tickets are selling fast.
MUSIC
Anyone who lived through the heady days of the late 90s will remember Ally McBeal. Now Vonda Shepard (Sun 2 Jul), the woman behind the show's music, is playing a rare Irish date for her fans at Pavilion. It’s the perfect opportunity to take a trip down memory lane in the company of an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning artist.
COMEDY
Featuring Sue Collins of The Nualas fame alongside Sinéad Culbert, Dirtbirds (Fri 21 Jul) is a hilarious YouTube sketch show-turned-stage comedy sensation! The ladies play a host of characters lampooning the Northside, the Southside and, naturally, beauty bloggers. Expect big laughs and even bigger personalities!
LITERARY
Hear from some of the best crime writers around, including Kathy Reichs, Benjamin Black, Haylen Beck, Liz Nugent and Karen Perry at the Dead in Dún Laoghaire Crime Writing Festival (Sat 22 Jul). It promises to be a jam-packed day of discussion, debate and insight.
CINEMA
Get whisked away to the Roman opera with our Special Cinema Screening of La Traviata (Thu 20 Jul). Directed by Oscar-winner Sophia Coppola and featuring costumes from acclaimed Italian designer Valentino, this performance of Verdi’s masterpiece transports audiences to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma for an evening of spellbinding music and song.
Our summer season of Monday Night Cinema closes out with a quartet of great films. Brazilian-French coproduction Aquarius (Mon 3 Jul) is the story of one woman fighting to save her apartment building from greedy developers. Next, The Sense of an Ending (Mon 10 Jul) is an adaptation of Julian Barnes’ Booker Prize-winning novel. Tanna (Mon 17 Jul), filmed in the remote South Pacific nation of Vanautu, tells a universal tale of forbidden love. And finally, Certain Women (Mon 24 Jul) takes audiences to another remote location: rural Montana. The film follows four very different women as they struggle to forge their own paths in difficult circumstances.
